VPK Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is VPK?
    • VPK stands for Voluntary PreKindergarten, a state-funded program that allows children to access high-quality early education.

  • How come Willmar preschool used to be free for everyone, but now there is criteria?
    • The state changed the criteria this year to prioritize children who would benefit most from programming or who would not be able to attend.

  • How do I know if I qualify?
    • The state of Minnesota created a criteria checklist. Some of the criteria include income, financial hardship, no preschool experience, and life changes such as divorce, new job, or moving to a different home.

  • What if I make too much financially to qualify?
    • There are other ways to qualify.

  • Can you still come to Willmar preschool if you don’t meet the criteria?
    • Yes! We also have fee-based options. We encourage you to contact us to discuss options or criteria.

  • I want to homeschool. Can I still utilize preschool for my child?
    • Yes! Preschool is a great way for your child to socialize and spend time with parents and family. We offer half-day options as well.
